Our Rights Come From God, Not Government
The principle of giving ruling power to the governed, and not a government, is what set America apart from its beginning. The concept laid out in the Declaration of Independence, that our rights come from God and not man, has been her defining quality. It is why tyrants fear her and liberty-loving people everywhere want to be her.
The first draft of the Declaration of Independence was presented to Congress on July 2, 1776, with its adoption occurring on July 4, 1776. It is now believed few, if any, actually signed it on that day, though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all declared its endorsement on the 4th.
To truly understand the uniqueness of America, one must only study its founding documents. Some of the most remarkable proclamations are made in the 2nd paragraph of this declaration:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident” – They are obvious, unmistakable, and undeniable. No one can take them away from you.
“That all men are created equal” – No matter race, creed or color, every person is CREATED equal. This does not guarantee equal pay, equal housing or even equal wealth. It acknowledges we are all creations, not accidents of nature. Considering one inferior because of race, religion, nationality, or social status is an evolutionistic “survival of the fittest” mentality, not one for God’s children. This pronouncement alone was central to the abolitionists’ argument that our Founding Fathers declared Africans to be white man’s equal. Likewise, equal creation does not assure humans will be void of conflict or war as evil lives and breaths here on earth.
“That they are endowed by their Creator” – Yes, our Founding Fathers DID believe in God, and that he was our Creator. Progressive liberals are tirelessly working to re-write history, removing references to God from our Founding Fathers’ mouths and pens. They claim we don’t actually know what “Creator” the Founding Fathers were referring to. Henry M. Morris, Ph.D., studied this question and discovered the following:
“In fact, all the signers of the Declaration and the delegates to the Constitutional Convention, as well as the delegates to the various sessions of the Continental Congress—at least so far as known—were men who believed in God and the special creation of the world and mankind. Nearly all were members of Christian churches and believed the Bible to be the inspired Word of God.”
They ignore that 23 out of the 56 signers were clergy. To think they meant anyone other than God as the Creator would be illogical. There is also no reason to believe these men would have denied prayer, Judeo-Christian principles and Christ’s name in the government. Pilgrims came here for Freedom OF Religion, not Freedom FROM Religion. It is well documented they spoke of Christ and God both in government and in their lives, not just in their churches. It is why Moses is etched into the Supreme Court building holding the 10 Commandments. Regardless, some will continue to reject God as the Creator despite the overwhelming evidence the Founders were undoubtedly referring to the Biblical God.
Another line of attack is towards Thomas Jefferson, arguing he was not Christian but a deist. They present The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, or the Jefferson Bible as it is informally called, as their proof. Jefferson personally selected and assembled a collection of gospel passages for distribution. Since he left out miracles and the Resurrection, he is accused of denying the true Christ. The truth is, Jefferson focused on the teachings of Christ as a model for Christian morality. He was not making a theological argument. He believed that if we follow Christ’s virtues, people had the principles and values to govern themselves, free from government’s shackles.
“with certain unalienable Rights” – Freedoms that can never be taken away nor can you give away.
“that among these are Life” – Life, that precious gift that God gives us at conception. The unalienable right thoughtlessly taken from over a million unborn babies every year. Life, that treasured gift from God we have a liberty to protect with any means necessary, including a gun, if it is threatened.
“Liberty” – The independence, freedom, and self-determination to dictate your own direction, your own path, and your own destiny. The only restriction is one’s rights end where another’s rights begin. Forcing a businessperson to violate their religious beliefs and participate in a same-sex wedding is a complete infringement of their inalienable right to liberty. Socialism, disguised at progressive liberalism, is liberty’s kryptonite and we are in serious danger of losing it for at least a generation, if not forever.
“and the pursuit of Happiness” – The original phrase considered here was “Property”. This was a concept Jefferson borrowed from John Locke. Since slave owners considered slaves property, the Founders replaced the term so slavery could not be misinterpreted as a constitutional right. “Pursuit of Happiness” grants you the right to actively strive for personal fulfillment. Is achievement guaranteed? Absolutely not, but you have the privilege to forge ahead with any past-time, faith, career, or invention you desire. Take heed to not get deceived into believing you are assured success.
“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” – An unprecedented design where the government’s power rests in the hands of the governed. With this power comes extreme responsibility. Americans are charged to hold their elected officials accountable for their actions. We must watch them diligently, speaking out at any attempt to restrict the God given rights just described. This is why Constitutionalists are so feared by both the Left and the Right in Washington. They are educating Americans about their rights, defending the Constitution, and exposing Washington as the pit of corruption it is.
John Adams penned the following sentiment to his wife on July 3, 1776. He characterized the historical significance of the Declaration of Independence perfectly, though he missed the party by two days.
“The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.
“You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth more than all the means; that posterity will triumph in that day’s transaction, even though we [may regret] it, which I trust in God we shall not.”
The Declaration of Independence proclaims there are certain freedoms given by God. Because of that, no man can deny them. This concept alone makes the document unprecedented, historical and unique. Before it, people were conditioned to accept that their rights were granted, as well as abolished, by a government or king. The Declaration broke that chokehold. Over the past 100 years, Progressives have been doing everything they can to return the government’s grip around our necks. God is actively being removed from our lives and our history. We have irradiated our “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty” so man can once again assume the role of ultimate authority.
May God be with us today as He was with us over 200 years ago. We have so fallen astray. God Bless you all and God Bless America.
